I have been using GPS-es on a motorbike for almost 25 years. It started with buying a 2nd hand Garmin 176 for my Honda Africa Twin. This GPS was only able to navigate in straight lines and still using special Garmin 32MB memorycards for storing maps. However, it worked and I liked it, especially driving long distance over smaller roads.
Later, I got a Garmin 276C and when switching to BMW, I also switched to the Zumo 660 and the BMW navigator V. - only for road use.
It changed when I was able to buy a Berrt 1150 GS Enduro. At that time in 2018, the new 276Cx just was released as a modern successor of the 176 and the 276c, which I really liked. Therefore, I quickly got the 276Cx for the 1150. This was also the GPS that I used in the Gibraltar Race of 2019 and later in various editions of the Alps Tourist Trophy. Currently, I am still using this GPS on the 1150 and as spare on the 701.
During the 2019 Gibraltar Race, I drove a lot togehter with Bert Duursma, learning form the master. Bert was at that time expirimenting with a tablet and Locusmap, which got my interest. A few years later, Rinus Versteeg was not satisfied with the BMW Navigator on his GS and first started expirimenting with a Ipad mini (which did not work). Later he switched to a Carpe Iter and recommended that to me.
When I bought a Husqvarna 701 in 2021, it was an easy choice. I would use a tablet (and a Carpe Iter) for navigation. Back then, Rinus provided a lot of advice and guidance on which apps (then Guru maps) to use and on tweaking the tablet and settings. A year later, I started expirimenting with more apps: DMD, Locus and Osmand).
In the Gibraltar race of 2023, I wanted to drive with the Husqvana and therefore need a suitable Tablet software solution for the Adventure Challenge formula. DMD (including the beta of DMD2) and Guru maps where not suitable. I could not get used to Osmand. So I had to force myself into learning Locus. This resulted in quite some changes to make it work for me and optimise it's use of which having a high contrast map layout suitable for offroad driving was key. Because what I wanted was not available, I started to adapt existing layouts for my own use (see the story under Locusmap) ..
