If you need (Openstreetmap) based maps for a Garmin or to use with Garmin basecamp, there are various sources for downloading, like:
None of these various map-layouts suits my full needs (and did not help to avoid navigation mistakes). Therefore, I decided on an evening to try to adapt the map layouts (Garmintyp file) and see, if I could apply some of the changes that I created for Locusmap.
Freizeitkarte:
I started with Freizeitkarte. For that, I have adapted the Freizeitkarte outdoor contrast typ file to have a different coloring of offroad roads and paths.
The changes include:
Black/yellow road layout (as with Locusmap) for OSM unpaved roads (grade 1 - grade 5, with a different striping for some of the grades - indicating the condition of the roads)
Purple/green (or something like that) for paths
Freizeitkarte standard
Freizeitkarte outdoor contrast
Adapted version of the outdoor contrast version
The layout should work with all Garmin GPS devices and has (quickly) been tested on a GPSMAP 276CX, The Montana 700 series and the Garmin Tread (Thanks to Pim Spanjer and Frans Schoonderwoerd). I was especially happy with the feedback of using it on the Garmin Tread (where I thought the maps where already pretty good).
Download the typ file here
Download Garmin Benelux map image (april 2024 version) here
Download Garmin Balkan map image (april 2024 version created for the Illyria Raid) here
Instructions on applying the typ file on other maps can be found on the Freizeitkarte web page. If you want to have an additional country published, just drop me a mail.
The image files can be punt in the /Garmin folder of your GPS or SD card of the GPS (and then need to be selected in the map selection of the GPS).
The layout has been tested during the 2024 spring edition of the Illyria Raid by me (as tablet backup), Anja de Hoog-Loman and Hendrik Loman and worked well.
Additionally, for the 2024 Illyria Raid, I adapted also the OpenTopoMap layout quickly of the balkan countries:
Also for OpenTopoMaps, I have (quickly) adapted the maplayouts. These are applicable for the regular maps, not for the coutour lines (download these from the OpenTopMaps site). Please note that these have not been tested yet and I am not yet satisfied with the layout. Maps for Basecamp also onrequest or adapt the Basecamp maps yourself with JaVaWa GMTK
The changes include:
Black/yellow road layout (as with Locusmap) for OSM unpaved roads (grade 1 - grade 5, altough the distinction is not made in the typ file)
Purple/green (or something like that) for paths

Current version (feedback and suggestions welcome!)
Included the links for NL and the Balkan countries (for the Illyria Raid). Other counties on request or apply the typ file yourself to the maps (maps are from the end of April 2024):
Garmin typ file (apply it yourself to other maps using the RepaceTyp tool on the Freizeitkarte website)*
Installation is simple. Just copy the *.img files in the /Garmin folder of your GPS (GPS or SD-card) and select the file on the GPS.
*Please make sure that you adapt the names of the type files (needs a bit of tweaking)
BBBike
I have no typefiles for the BBBike maps. Most (or none) of the Garmin maps do not have a type file (as far as I could find).
